Session 1 Post 2

Look at the 21st Century Skills. Review the descriptions of each and think about what each could mean for YOUR grade/subject. Which of these skills can you incorporate into your unit? What would using these skills look like in your classroom?

I will be using the Information Literacy Skills in my unit. This unit will include accessing information efficiently and effectively, evaluating information critically, using information accurately and creatively to solve a problem assigned by the teacher. This would be done in collaboration on a research project with a classroom teacher.

I think demonstrating the ability to work effectively with diverse teams, demonstrating originality and inventiveness in their work, understanding interconnections, and using technology would be a great place to start with my 6th grade. Problem solving skills will travel with them throughout their lives, so this skill is essential. Communication is another essential. I think that all of these skills are obtainable in my classroom.

I teach 11th grade English and Social Studies. I think I could use all of these skills in both of my classes in my units. However, it is impossible to incorporate every skill into one unit. I think I will focus on the ICT networking skill, the framing, analyzing, and synthesizing skill, and the Productivity and Accountability skills. I want to start a Gaggle account for my classes so that I can have discussions with them and have them analyze and formulate conclusions with other people’s thoughts. I also want to have a culminating project in which they have to frame a question and then use the skills necessary to come up with a solution. For the productivity and accountability having the students self guide themselves though the project - setting deadlines for themselves, turning things in when they finish them, and being held responsible for meeting my deadlines. I hope that makes sense. :)

I will use critical thinking and problem solving in my unit. i have a number of students who cannot combine two steps in reading, and I hope to develop their ability to think.

Media literacy is a critical and valuable skill for today’s high school students. Many students are immersed in the technology that they use and take for granted, but rarely understand the implications of their actions and use of that technology. Some feel that if it exists in the digital domain that it must be true and valid. I would like to use more instructional time helping students understand the value of the information they are bombarded with and how to use technology more responsibly.

An attempt to articulate thoughts and ideas more efficiently by speaking and writing on the part of my students from student team work. Technology will be used to reference and organize data for understanding and problem solving. Students wiil learn responsibility and ethics necessary for better interests of the community.

I think I can incorporate a skill from each of the "big skills" into my unit. My subject matter is mathematics for students in grades 3-6 who need supplemental math instruction. These 21st century skills would be displayed through student-directed activities and collaboration resulting in a product they create from the knowledge they have acquired along the way.

It appears I can't comment on each of YOUR comments ... hmmm ... that's a problem. Overall I see that everyone has their juices flowing and are beginning to think about the unit they would like to create in this course! It looks like you have some very good ideas and big goals.

It is absolutely true that you cannot incorporate every skill into one unit. It's best to pick and choose those that fit best.
